What is CSCMP?

Founded in 1963, the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) is the preeminent worldwide professional association dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of research and knowledge on supply chain management. With over 8,500 members representing nearly all industry sectors, government, and academia from 67 countries, CSCMP members are the leading practitioners and authorities in the fields of logistics and supply chain management.

The organization is lead by an elected group of global officers with its headquarters located in Lombard, Illinois, USA.

Why should you care?

Think about what you had for breakfast. Your juice, coffee, cereal, fruit, and milk didn’t just appear. Nor did your toaster, refrigerator, or stove; not even the kitchen sink. Yet, these products are routinely available to you through the machinations of a dedicated group of logistics and supply chain professionals and a complex, interconnected web known as the supply chain. Without them, you’d still be milking your own cow.

The role of the supply chain professional

Hannibal was widely heralded as a brilliant general and military genius. His left-end sweep across the Mediterranean and over the Alps caught the Romans by surprise and unprepared. But who was the genius that wrangled the elephants and transported the feed, blankets, arms, and countless other provisions so Hannibal’s army could rout the unsuspecting Romans? If he were alive today, he’d be a CSCMP member.

Supply chain professionals order the product, build it, move it, ship it, distribute it, and drive the coordination processes with marketing, sales, engineering, manufacturing, finance, and information technology. In short, they make Hannibal look good. And please the stockholders, too.

A shrinking world

In today’s world of expanding global trade and just-in-time sourcing, the supply chain professional needs to be more resourceful than ever. The world is shrinking, and many organizations are as likely to source products from overseas as from next door. Today, supply chains are measured in thousands of miles and in minutes, so CSCMP members have a global reach and a place at the head table.

Dependency on the supply chain

The supply chain is a complex and sometime fragile endeavor dependent on a network of independent, yet interconnected, moving parts. It requires professional management.

Conferences, roundtables, and online resources

The continuing education of its members and sharing of best practices is the cornerstone of CSCMP. The organization’s annual global conference brings together thousands of supply chain professionals from all over the world to exchange ideas and share knowledge. CSCMP also conducts hundreds of local roundtables across the country and around the globe, making it easy for members to connect with their counterparts closer to home. In addition, CSCMP provides online education opportunities to supply chain professionals near and far. Its Online University offers members and potential members easy access to the latest in logistics and supply chain management science.
