As the landscape of the Logistics industry continues to evolve and change, we routinely need to stop, reflect, and take it all in. This year’s Spring Forum aims to provide you with the opportunity to do just that: reflect on what were the transformational events of the past that have defined Logistics, consider the current trends in regulation, E-Commerce, and technology that are likely the defining initiatives of today’s generation, and learn from local senior leaders regarding how these industry-wide events are impacting local businesses (and how these local leaders’ own careers have evolved). So, whether you are looking to understand the present through the prism of the past, trying to predict what the upcoming “Game Changers” are in the Logistics industry, hoping to learn something about local businesses and the keys to senior leaders’ success, or simply looking for a unique opportunity to network with industry leaders and peers, the Columbus Roundtable Spring Forum has something to offer you! This year’s Spring Forum features extraordinary speakers, such as:

Kevin Burch, Chief Executive Officer, Jet Express, Past Chairman of the Truckload Carriers Association and Current Vice Chair of American Trucking Association. In addition to serving as Vice Chair at ATA, Mr. Burch is intimately involved in the development of policy and is uniquely qualified to provide a first-hand account of what the regulatory landscape looks like for 2013 and beyond.

Rick Jackson, Executive Vice President, Limited Brands, and Chair, Board of Directors, CSCMP. Mr. Jackson will participate on a panel of local experts to share his perspective on his personal career successes, as well as how the changing landscape in the Logistics industry is impacting Limited Brands specifically.

Michael Duffy, Executive Vice President, Cardinal Health. Mr. Duffy will also share his perspective on his personal career successes, as well as how the changing landscape of the Logistics industry is impacting Cardinal Health in particular.

Jake Bessembinders, Senior Director of Intermodal, Union Pacific. Mr. Bessembinders will participate on a panel of speakers to provide an engaging, retrospective overview of the many ways in which transportation has undergone radical changes over the course of history.

John Ehmann, Senior V.P. Client Services, eBay/GSI. Mr. Ehmann will share information to assure your business knows how to capitalize on e-commerce opportunities, including cutting edge developments in Omni-Channel Retailing and related endeavors.

Transportation and logistics are at the heart of any supply chain. What are you doing to ensure that you are prepared for the road ahead?

Let the Columbus Roundtable jumpstart your New Year! 2013 promises to be another year filled with challenges and opportunities for providers and commercial users of transportation and logistics services. The industry is continuing to wrestle with a sluggish economy while facing a cascade of federal regulatory activity that is not expected to subside. Uncertainty abounds. For instance:

Will the July 1, 2013 compliance date for the new Hours-of-Service regulations stick?

Will the long-anticipated new Safety Fitness Determination regulations be revealed?

Will Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) continue to undergo “enhancements”?

Will inconsistencies regarding Electronic On-Board Recorders be resolved?

Will shippers and transportation brokers continue to face increased liability exposure?

Please join us on Friday, January 18, 2013 for a lunchtime panel discussion of some of these regulatory issues as well as many other pressing business issues (including the driver shortage, the need to replacement aging equipment, and domestic infrastructure deficiencies) that you will face in 2013. Our blue ribbon panel will consist of a shipper representative, a motor carrier representative, and a transportation broker representative to ensure that you hear all perspectives. More specifically, you will hear real-world insights on the most timely of issues from:

Kevin Kannally, Cardinal Health, Inc. Mr. Kannally will provide the shipper’s perspective as he serves as Vice President, Corporate Operations, for Cardinal Health, Inc., where he is responsible for optimizing the Pharmaceutical Distribution supply chain as well as developing solutions and adding value across the entire healthcare supply chain. Cardinal Health is a publicly-traded Fortune 21 companying employing more than 30,000 people worldwide involved in the distribution of pharmaceuticals and medical products.

Allery Webb, Pitt Ohio. Mr. Webb will provide the motor carrier’s perspective as he serves as National Account Manager for Pitt Ohio, a privately held non-union transportation solutions company based in Pittsburgh, PA, providing truckload, less-than-truckload, and related ground and supply chain services. Mr. Webb has been with Pitt Ohio for more than 17 years in a variety of operational and sales management positions, working to help existing and potential new customers find ways to reduce cost and solve supply chain issues.

Dick Hitchcock, New Age Transportation, Distribution, and Warehousing. Mr. Hitchcock, a transportation industry veteran, will provide the transportation broker’s perspective. Mr. Hitchcock currently serves as Vice President of Corporate Accounts at New Age Transportation, Distribution, and Warehousing, an independent third-party freight intermediary that has been in business for over 20 years. He recently retired from BNSF Logistics, where he long served as Director of Corporate Accounts, and has provided industry leadership as an officer and director in numerous logistics organizations including NASSTRAC, RILA, NITL, ATA, and CSCMP.

Learn what these individuals and companies are doing to respond successfully to the uncertainty of 2013. Marc Blubaugh, Past President of the Columbus Roundtable and Co-Chair of the Transportation & Logistics Practice Group at the law firm of Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff LLP, will moderate the panel.

With all that is happening in transportation and logistics as 2013 gets underway, you simply cannot afford to miss this panel. Buckle up and get ready for a fast-paced discussion that promises to leave you with fresh insights and, most importantly, practical take-aways that you can implement in your own business!

Fawcett Center

2400 Olentangy River Road

Columbus, Ohio 43210

11:30 – 1:00 pm

Moderator: Angelo Mazzocco, President, Pillar and Founder of the CIO Forum

Panel Members: Worthington Industries and IBM

WMS, TMS, ERP, AP…Do any of those acronyms given make you pause during meetings?

A past Council of Supply Chain Professionals (CSCMP) Columbus Roundtable Board member had a sign in his office that said, “Unless you are faster than a speeding bullet and can leap tall buildings in a single bound, you do not install an ERP and a WMS at the same time.”

The message was simple; Supply Chain technology projects are large, complex, and prone to massive failure if not done correctly.

Because of the assumed complexity of these projects, and articles that often get published touting the “Top 10 Supply Chain Technology Implementation Disasters of All Time,” many executives take on technology focused projects unwillingly or not at all for fear of failure.

While Technology Projects can be large, complex, and resource intensive, there are best practices and principles that companies are applying that reduce risk, help manage costs, and allow technology projects to succeed.

Often we hear about how companies fail to implement solutions, while there are many companies successfully implementing large scale projects with great success.

How did Fed-Ex grow so rapidly in a competitive market controlled by UPS and USPS to become a dominate player in parcel while driving out such firms as DHL from the US?

How did Walmart and Carrefour grow to become the dominate global retailers while entrenched players such as Sears now struggle to survive?

How did Ford manage to avoid bankruptcy and continue to drive higher profits while GM and Chrysler strain to move beyond bankruptcy even though they negotiated better labor terms out of bankruptcy?

Of course there are a variety of causes but one of the key differentiators between the winners and the losers is the use of Analytics and specifically Mathematical Optimization. Learn more at the November 17th roundtable and discover how companies are using optimization within their Supply Chain to achieve operational excellence to gain a significant competitive advantage. Learn how this technology works, impacts businesses, why it is becoming more pervasive, and how over the next decade will come to define the winners vs. the losers in the marketplace and will become essential capability in the 21st century. This topic is critical for anyone in an analyst/planner role, manager or executive role and students just entering the job marketplace.
